Everything was simpler 10 years ago
Whey was king. Easily digestible, high in leucine, every bodybuilder swore by it. If you wanted muscles, you bought whey. If you took pea protein, you were either vegan or lactose intolerant.
Today? Scientists are no longer so sure.
Not because the trend has reversed. But because studies have shown something that no one had on their radar ten years ago: Whey is good for your muscles. But plant-based protein is better for your life.

What we know today
Plant-based or whey for muscles? It doesn't matter.
First, the most important study: 12 weeks, double-blind, randomized. Young men doing strength training. One half received whey, the other pea protein.
Result: Same muscle gain. No difference.
McMaster University re-examined this in 2024. Looked more closely. At muscle protein synthesis — the actual mechanism. Same result: If you adjust the quantities, plant-based protein is just as anabolic as whey.
What this means for you: If you take whey because you're afraid of getting "less" with plants — that fear is no longer justified. Ten years ago, the argument was valid. Not anymore.

This is where it gets interesting.
A meta-analysis in the British Medical Journal evaluated data from 700,000 people. Over several decades. Several countries.
The calculation was simple: Those who derived 3% more of their calories from plant-based protein had a 5% lower mortality risk.
3% of calories. That's about 60 kcal more from plant sources on a normal day. A handful of lentils. A bag of pea protein chips. That's all.
For animal protein? The trend goes in the opposite direction. More of it = higher risk, especially for people with at least one unhealthy lifestyle factor.

How much protein do I need daily? Physically active adults: 1.4–2.0 g per kg body weight. For 80 kg, that's 112–160 g. Can be easily covered over three meals plus 1–2 protein-rich snacks.
Is pea protein a "complete" protein? Pea protein contains all 9 essential amino acids, but is relatively low in methionine. In combination with other plant-based sources — like in our Protein Chips with potato and rice — the profile is complete.
Does plant-based protein make you feel fuller than whey? Tendency, yes. Especially in solid form with fiber. Liquid whey shakes are significantly less satiating than solid, fiber-rich protein snacks.
